Saya dilahirkan di Purworejo pada saat ayah saya pindah dari Batavia (sekarang Jakarta) ke Purworejo karena idak mau bekerja sama dengan penjajah Jepang. Eyang saya dari fihak ayah adalah R.M.Sosrodikoesoemo, patih Purworejo selama 30 tahun lebih. Eyang R.M.Sosrodikoesoemo adalah putra dari R.M.Sontokoesoemo, yang adalah kakak dari R.M.Soerjokoesoemo. Nah tahu sendiri sekarang bahwa ibu saya adalah tantenya ayah saya.

Saya lahir pada jaman Jepang, yang pada saat tersebut semua serba kekurangan. Untung sekalai ayah saya, yang tidak mau bekerja untuk pemerintah Jepang, pulang ke Purworejo dan membeli sawah cukup luas sehingga dapat menjamin keluarga eyang Sosrodikoesoemo dan keluarga ayah saya sendiri.

Karena melihat kedepan kemungkinan untuk menyekolahkan anak-anak kurang baik kalau di Purworejo, maka ayah saya pindah ke Magelang. Pada jaman perang dengan Belanda, kami mengungsi sampai dilereng gunung Sumbing, saya masih kecil sekali.

Kembali ke Magelang kira kira tahun 1949, dan tahun 1950 saya mulai sekolah, taman kanak-kanak dankemudian Sekolah Rakyat (SR- sekarang SD), SMP saya mengikuti kakak-kakak saya yang laki-laki di SMP Negeri I, SMP favorit ,kata orang sekarang. SMA saya di SMA katolik namaya “Pendowo” (sama dengan Canisius lah).

Setelah lulus pada tahun 1963, saya mendaftar ke ITB. Pada saat itu ujian saringan di Semarang, saya menganbil jurusan Biologi (Departemen Kimia-Biologi). Dan diterima.

Sekolah di ITB cukup lama karena ditabrak G30S, dua tahun tidak ada ujian. Saya termasuk aktivis, sampai ketingkat yang sama-sama Sarwono, Wimar Witular dkk, tetapi saya mulai melihat bagaimana “acrobat” calon politisi pada saat itu, yang tidak sesuai dengan hati nurani saya, maka saya mengundurkan diri. Kembali ke kampus dan mengajukan permohonan ujian-ujian beberapa matakuliah yang ketinggalan. Waah para Professor saya dan dosen senior bilang: Lho kan kamu sendiri yang minta kegiatan kurikuler dihentikan? Kok sekarang minta ujian? Waduh saya malu juga karena memang kami dulu yang meminta supaya kegiatan kurikuler slow down dulu.

Jadi kuliah saya jadi mundur, saya baru lulus th 1971 (lama ya?)

Pada saat saya masih ditingkat akhir ada utusan dari Kementerian Kesehatan Jakarta, Direktorat Jenderal Pemberantasan Penyakit Menular yang mencari biolog muda. Kebetulan saya waktu itu one of the best, maka saya langsung ditunjuk utk memenuhi permintaan tersebut. Saya adalah lulusan pertama dari angkatan 1963…..

Begitu lulus langsung ke Jakarta dan melapor ke Direktorat Jenderal P4M, Kementerian Kesehatan, pada sat itu Dirjen P4M adalah Prof Dr. Sulianti Saroso. Saya ditempatkan di Sub Direktorat Zoonosis. Dengan inisiatif sendiri saya mengunjungi Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU-2) yang berada dalam satau kompleks di Jl.Percetakan Negara 2. Saya ketemu Direkturnya, Dr. Van Peenen, saya walau baru lulus sudah berani berbicara bahasa Inggris dan “bedebat” dengan van Peenen tentang penyakit pes.

Suatu hari saya dipanggil ibu Dirjen disuruh ikut rapat dengan NAMRU dan FK UI dan lain2. Mereka membicarakan suatu proyek penelitian di Sulawesi Tengah, yaitu tentang penyakit yang disebut schistosomiasis. Dirapat tersebut  tiba-tiba bu Dirjen bilang, Sudomo (begitu saya biasa dipanggil), saudara saya minta untuk memimpin peneilitian schistosomiasis di Sulteng, beliau bilang, saya kira saudara cocok, masih muda, disana masih seperti “Wild West”, kata beliau sambil tersenyum. Waduhh saya belum bisa menyanggupi karena belum ada bayangan.

Esoknya saya di NAMRU bertemu dengan pak Soeroto, lhoo kok ada saudara disini. Maka saya meminta nasehat beliau, beilau bilang: “dimas Moh sebaiknya ke Sulawesi, belum ada yang menelitia schistosomiasis di Indonesia”. Maka berangkatlah saya kedataran tinggi Lindu (kl 1000 m dpl). Ternyata ibu Sulianti tidak salah: benar-benar Wild West, untuk mencapaidaerah di sekitar danau Lindu harus naik kuda selama 5-6 jam. (saya sedang menulis buku tentang Ekspidisi Danau Lindu, tentu ceritanya lebih detail). Saya sangat berterima kasih kepada RPKAD yang pernah melatih kami pada waktu mahasiswa, sehingga untuk hidup ditengah hutan, in the middle of nowhere, mengatur pembantu peneliti dan masyarakat yang masih ‘wild’(maaf) saya dapat melakukannya tanpa kendala walau kadang juga harus agak keras.

Saya sangat bersyukur  bias melakukan penelitian di danau Lindu bekerja sama dengan NAMRU-2, saya belajar banyak dari para peneliti Amerika. Pengalaman di danau Lindu yang mengubah cara berfikir saya dan jalan hidup saya.

Selama hampir tiga tahun saya di danau Lindu melakukan penelitian epidemiologi schistosomiasis. Dengan penelitian yang saya lakukan maka lengkaplah siklus hidup schistosomiasis. Dari saat pertama kali penyakit tersebut ditemukan pada tahun 1935 sampai 1970an belum diketahui cara penularan dan sebaginaya. Dengan data yang sudah lengkap maka pada tahun 1975 ibu Sulianti mengirim saya ke International Conference on Schistosomiasis di Cairo, saya sebagai pembicara. Saya dinilai mempunyai performance yang bagus, maka ibu Sulianti mengirim saya ke Schweizeriches Tropensinstitut di Basel, Switzerland untuk mempersiapkan disertasi saya, 1976-1978 saya melakukan penelitian laboratorium untuk melengkapi penelitian lapangan saya di danau Lindu. Maka pada 1980 saya menjadi Doktor Schistosomiasis pertama di Indonesia. Saya mengambil program sandwitch dengan ITB, sehingga saya mengambil doktornya di ITB. Sebetulnya disertasi saya sudah siap pada th 1978, tetapi kendala administrasi yang menyebabkan promosi baru dilakukan pada tahun 1980.

Semenjak itu saya bekerja di Badan Penelitian dan Pengembangan Kesehatan, banyak penelitian saya mendapat dana dari luar negeri. Saya bukan lagi melakukan peneltian schistosomiasis tetapi “vector borne disases”secara umum. Kerja sama dengan luar negeri makin sering, (WHO, ICDC, Denmark dll). Publikasi juga semakin banyak. Perjalanan keluar negeri sudah meliputi lima benua, di dalam negeri sudah dari Sabang sampai Marauke, dari Miangas sampai pulau Rote. Semua berkat keong, nyamuk dan cacing.

Sering diundang untuk ikut  pertemuan WHO di Geneva untuk membicarakan penanggulangan berbagai penyakit di dunia. Di Southeast Asia dan Western Pacific region saya pernah menjadi anggauta WHO-RPRG (Regional Program Review Group) on lymphatic Filariasis; menjadi salah satu pendiri dan anggauta RNAS (Regional Network on Asian Schistosomiasis).

Pada tahun 2008 saya diangkat menjadi Research Professor pertama dari Kementerian Kesehatan. Th 2008 tanggal 1 Apri pensiun dari PNS dan pada hari yang sama saya diminta WHO untuk menangani Research dan laboratorium untuk Avian Influenza. Pada saat ini ditambah dengan MERSCoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus), Leptospirosis. Japanese Encephalitis dan Hantaan Virus.

Saya juga menerima berbagai penghargaan baik dari pemerintah maupun dari international organisation.
